Who dat Gullah?

The Penn Center’s annual presentation of the flags of the Gullah people uniquely answers this question. The Gullah are descendants of African forebears who are directly linked through language, folkways, customs. These flags that represent countries from which Gullah people originated or which they inhabit. (bfc)

 Today, the cultural and linguistic umbrella of the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor extends from Wilmington , NC to Jacksonville , FL. People who identify as Gullah or Geechee represent the many ways that Africans in the Americas have held on to and amalgamated the traditions of Africa with the cultures they encountered both during and after enslavement.

These stalwart descendants of African forebears are directly linked through language, folkways, and customs.  Flags representing the original African home countries of many of these people are represented below. Flags representing their first homes away from home are also included. We salute those countries from whence they came. We continue to learn from and about those countries to which they were scattered.  Against all odds, they persevere – together!
